New tasting room under construction

A link on the K Vintners Facebook page this week offers a tantalizing peek into the construction taking place on downtown Walla Walla's Spokane Street.

The construction of a tasting room and retail space for Charles Smith Wines has been under way, but few details about the project have been revealed.

According to a posting on the K Vintners page, the new tasting room is slated to open this spring. Seattle firm Olson Kundig Architects is designing the project. The company's work includes museums, commercial design, academic buildings, exhibit design, interior design, places of worship and residences.

A few renderings viewable on the website of the Walla Walla project convey a retail storefront with the name "The Velvet Devil." Check it out at olsonkundigarchitects.com and linking to projects in progress.

Learn the basics of growing and caring for fruit tees at an upcoming workshop by certified arborist Andy Asmus.

Asmus, the owner of Home Orchard Tree and Care, will explore basic tree biology, pruning and training of young and mature trees, and the rejuvenation of aging or damaged trees at a two-hour workshop Jan. 29. Since winter is the dormant season for trees, he said now is a great time to prune.

Participants will also spend time with Asmus on his own 5-year-old fruit trees at his home at 756 Mill Creek Road. Based there, Home Orchard and Tree Care specializes in the care and preservation of trees of all ages and size.

Walla Walla's Harvest Foods is cooking up a warm menu for a fast meal Friday.

The Southgate grocery store, 905 S. Second Ave., will be sampling chili throughout the day.

The event runs 11:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Guests are invited to drop by and sample the housemade regular chili or a vegetarian-style version with corn muffins made from the bakery. Recipes created by some of the store's own team members will be on hand, and takeout will be available.
