ATHENA --The Athena-Weston School Board is seeking a candidate to serve on the board following the sudden death of an active member.
Duane Beers, a resident of the Upper Umatilla River, died Oct. 28 of an apparent heart attack; he was 72.
Beers earned a bachelor's degree in education from Walla Walla College, according to his obituary. He was a teacher early in his career, and then moved into logging and construction, including time working on the Trans-Alaskan Pipeline.
Later in life Beers returned to education and served as a bus driver, transportation supervisor, and eventually a school board member.
Beers represented zone 7 of the school district, said Superintendent Jerry Copeland, which covers the area around the Umatilla River toward the Confederated Tribes of Umatilla Indian Reservation.
