THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - The Whitman College swim teams finished their annual week-long training trip to southern California on Wednesday with impressive performances at the Cal Lutheran Relay Invitational in Thousand Oaks.

Whitman dominated a three-way women's competition, scoring 416 points to outdistance Cal Lutheran and Pepperdine, who finished with 348 and 218 points, respectively.

The Missionary women took first place in five of six events, placing second in the only race they didn't win.

Meanwhile, the Whitman men finished a close second to Cal Lutheran in a two-way battle. The Missionaries won two events and placed second three times, but the host school won the day's final race to edge Whitman 410-406 in the final point totals for the men.

Both Whitman and Cal Lutheran are NCAA Division III schools. Pepperdine is NCAA Division I.

The Whitman women, after finishing second in the day's opening race (4x100-yard individual medley), proceeded to win the five remaining races.

Senior Lauren Flynn, sophomores Helen Jenne, Katie Chapman and Charlotte Graham, and first-year teammate Ellen Banks were contributors to two victories each.

Junior Monica Boshart, sophomore Elizabeth Arnosti and first-year Missionaries Melanie Notari, Keller Hawkins, Claire Collins and Genay Pilarowski were part of one winning relay each.

In the men's competition, sophomore Paul Chang was part of winning Whitman efforts in the 150-yard backstroke relay, where he teamed with senior Jamie Nusse and freshman Shunei Asao, and in the 150-yard breaststroke, where he joined forces with senior Nick Wood and junior Chris Bendix.

Both Whitman victories on the men's side featured Missionary teams placing second in those races as well.

Juniors Matt Rowett and Ian Williams teamed with sophomore Andrew Roehrig to take runner-up honors in the backstroke relay, while seniors Brian Wakefield and Chad Trexler joined sophomore Adam Brayton to take second in the breaststroke race.

The Whitman swimmers, still on semester break, return home this weekend to resume Northwest Conference dual meet action.

The Missionaries host Linfield at 6 p.m. Friday and Willamette at 1 p.m. Saturday.
