Joan was born on Nov. 23, 1933 in Walla Walla to Lucile and Clarence Strange. She died at her home of cancer on Jan. 11, 2011, with her immediate family at her bedside. She had an older brother, Bill. All her family of origin members preceded her in death. There was cremation. Interment will be at the Mountain View Cemetery in Walla Walla.
Joan is survived by her husband, Frederick, her three children, Melanie Cook, Shauna Steingrebe and Scott Smokoski, as well as seven young adult grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Joan took great pride in her family as each reflects the values of hard work, enjoyment of life and responsibility for the care of living things.
Joan received her BA degree from Whitman College, where she earned membership in Phi Beta Kappa for her academic achievement. She subsequently earned a master's degree from Central Washington State College and a Ph.D. from the University of Colorado. She spent her 40-year career working in the field of mental health, the last 18 of which were in private practice as a marriage and family therapist.
Among her interests were reading, cooking, traveling to faraway places with her husband, and spending time with family and friends. Over the years she had many wonderful animal companions, all of whom needed a loving home.
