Common in the summer but not usual in the winter, heat waves ripple above a rapidly melting field near Hood Road turning the wind farm and hills above Milton-Freewater into a wavey, mirage-like band. A warm wind from the south gust through the valley Wednesday morning and---along with rain---had the snow gone by Thursday morning. January 12, 2011
