ECHO, Ore. - Helix faltered in the first two quarters here Friday as Echo defeated the Grizlies 40-23 in a girls Big Sky Conference Eastern Division basketball game.

The Cougars used pressure defense to build a 13-4 lead after one quarter and extended the lead to 25-8 at halftime. The teams played to a 15-15 standoff in the second half.

"They put on full-court pressure and came out and played really hard," Helix coach Dean Fouquette said of the Cougars. "They are the real deal. They are going to fight it out for the division title, no doubt."

Lauren Elligsen finished with 20 points and Taylor Tarvin added 10 as they combined for 30 of Echo's 40 points.

"Lauren had a terrific game," Fouquette said of Elligsen. "She shot well from long range. That was as fine a shooting performance as we've had against us all year."

Chyanne Hack led Helix with 10 points and Claire Ely added six points on a pair of 3-point baskets.

Echo improved its record to 10-4 while Helix dipped to 5-9.
