ST. JOHN, Wash. - The Pomeroy girls basketball team suffered its second loss of the season here Friday night as the Pirates fell, 54-38, to St. John-Endicott in a Southeast 1B League counter.

"It was a good wake-up call for us," Pomeroy coach Nettie Severs said. "We've had ugly games we've come out on top of, and this is a team you have to play well against or you don't win. It's good for us to improve on."

The Pirates (10-2, 5-2) fell into an early 14-8 hole, but a second-half run helped keep them in contention, down just three points at the half.

Gretchen Van Lith led the Eagles with 22 points and Alli Winters added 20.

Hailey Hyer paced the Pirates with 11 points and Melissa Bartlow chipped in eight.

"We didn't shoot very well and we had lots of turnovers (18)," Severs said. "We got outhustled."

Down by 10 with a few minutes left, the Pirates started fouling,

"They're a great free-throw team and we couldn't get back in it," she said.

The Pirates hosted Colton Saturday in another SE1B counter.
