ATHENA - Weston-McEwen had plenty of reason to come out flat on Saturday at home against Heppner, having defeated teams that were ranked No. 2 and No. 1 in Oregon State 2A rankings at the times that they played them over the last week, but the TigerScots still managed to claw out of an early hole to score a 54-51 win over the Mustangs.

Heppner came out strong in hopes of an upset over the TigerScots, who have broken into the top 10 in the state poll, and the Mustangs built a six-point spread at the break.

"We came out with no intensity," said W-M head coach Brian Pickard. "They took advantage of that, and they got out on us. Fortunately we were able to pick it up on defense in the second half."

The TigerScots (11-4, 4-1) trailed by as many as 10, but used the increased defensive intensity to pull themselves back into the game.

"The defensive pressure we got from Tyler Babb and Dallas Reich really set the tone for us," Pickard said. "Our defense is what got our offense going, and those two steals we came up with late were huge, obviously. They swung the game for us."

Babb lead the TigerScots in scoring on the night with 23 points, including a 9-for-10 night at the line and 10 rebounds, while Reich paced W-M with a trio of assists.

Cody Orr guided the Mustang offensive attack with a game-high 26 points.

"What it came down to was that we were able to buckle down defensively," Pickard said. "Once we did that we were able to get in transition and get some easy buckets, which got us going."

Up next for W-M is a well deserved bye on Tuesday before heading to Pilot Rock on Friday.
