Finance session aims to smooth road to college

Volunteers from Whitman will be at Wa-Hi to help with financial planning for college-bound students and their families.

WALLA WALLA -- Volunteers from Whitman College will host a "College Goal Sunday Washington" event Jan. 23 to help local high-school students and their families tackle financial planning for college.

The free event will be held from 1-4 p.m. at the Walla Walla High School library. It is one of a series happening across the state to help college-bound students learn the ins and outs of applying for financial aid.

Financial aid and admissions officers from Whitman will be on hand to help high-schoolers fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

The event marks the fourth year Whitman staff members have volunteered and coordinated the free session. Between 50 and 100 students are expected to attend.

Pre-registration is not required, but an online sign-up guarantees a time slot. Parents are also strongly encouraged to attend to help fill out basic household financial information. Students' social security number, driver's license, if any, and other financial records are needed to complete the financial aid application. Families without paperwork are still encouraged to attend to get the process started.
