Man charged in break-in, assault

Patrick N. Walmsley is accused of burglary, assault and malicious mischief in connection with Sunday's incident.

WALLA WALLA -- A man who allegedly broke into a woman's home and assaulted her last weekend was formally charged Tuesday afternoon in Superior Court with three crimes.

Patrick M. Walmsley, 40, of 37 W. Imperial St., is accused of first-degree burglary -- domestic violence, second-degree assault -- domestic violence, and third-degree malicious mischief.

Police said Walmsley entered the bedroom window of Rachel Scott at 410 Chase Ave., Apt. 103, about 1 a.m. Sunday. He then struck Scott in the mouth with a baseball bat, tearing her bottom lip and causing it to bleed, according to a police report filed in court.

Walmsley then allegedly used the bat to smash the apartment's front picture window as Scott was calling 911.

Walmsley was detained outside by a witness who ordered him to drop the bat and get on the ground until police arrived.

Walmsley and Scott have been friends since they were children. Walmsley recently had pressed Scott to enter into a dating relationship with him, but she rebuffed his advances, according to the police report.

Bail for Walmsley, who was booked into the County Jail, was set at $25,000. He was released on bond this morning.
