Raymond John Kongorski of Athena passed away Jan. 17, 2011, at Park Manor Rehabilitation Center in Walla Walla.
He was born in Chicago, Ill., on July 16, 1922, to John Kay and Johanna Voight. He married Violet Watts on July 25, 1942. After completing his tour of service in the Air Force, he attended Assumption College in Worcester, Mass., where he graduated with a teaching degree in languages.
Following a career of teaching languages in secondary schools, he retired after the death of his daughter, Patsy Hamel, to care for her three children.
He was a devout Christian and was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist faith. He loved nature and was an avid bird watcher in his younger days. He was a member of the Audubon Society. He loved to share his interest in bird watching with his children and church members and was always ready to take people on a hike to bird watch.
He is survived by his loving wife, Violet Kongorski; son, Dale Kongorski of Sequim, Wash; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter.
The memorial funeral service will be held Friday, Jan. 21, at 11 a.m. at the Herring Groseclose Funeral Home, 315 W. Alder St., Walla Walla, WA. Memorial contributions may be made to 3ABN Television through the funeral home.
