A police pursuit Saturday night ended with a crash just outside of Waitsburg.
According to documents presented in Walla Walla County Superior Court today, the incident began at 10:14 p.m. on Saturday when a Walla Walla County sheriff's deputy reported encountering what appeared to be a disabled vehicle on Middle Waitsburg Road near Londagin Road.
The officer stopped behind the vehicle, but it pulled out and began traveling north toward Waitsburg, according to the report. The vehicle stopped again a short time later and the deputy contacted the driver, identified as Sterling T. Stapleton, 25, 122 Heron Hollow Road, Prescott. However, while waiting for a driver's license check on Stapleton, the officer reported the vehicle sped off.
The deputy pursued the vehicle north at speeds reaching 80 mph. When the driver reached the intersection of Middle Waitsburg Road and U.S. Highway 12, the vehicle went out of control and crashed into an embankment on the east side of the highway, according to the sheriff's report.
Stapleton was arrested immediately after the crash for investigation of felony attempting to elude a pursuing police vehicle, driving while intoxicated, second-degree driving with a suspended license and ignition interlock required.
