Tsugiko "Sue" Mercado died at her home in Renton, on Jan. 14, 2011, after a courageous year-long battle with cancer. Sue was a devoted mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend to many. She enjoyed spending time with family, loved animals, the Seattle Mariners, flower gardening and traveling. She particularly loved spending time along the Oregon coast.
Sue was born to Yaichi and Saye Takasaki on Nov. 29, 1925, in Seattle. She lived in Kingston and attended school in Poulsbo. She attended North Kitsap High School until her junior year during which she was interned at the Tule Lake Relocation Center for Japanese-Americans. She graduated from the camp high school. Later, she attended Walla Walla Business College. In 2009, she participated in the graduation ceremony of North Kitsap High School as an honorary graduate.
Sue was released from the internment camp in 1943 to work in Walla Walla. She later served as secretary at the Walla Walla Farm Labor Camp. Sue married Carl Mercado in 1951. They had four children. She spent the majority of her career as a legal secretary at law firms including Minnick, Hayner, Zagelow in Walla Walla and Perkins Coie in Seattle, where she retired in 1987.
Sue served on the College Place School Board and was active in the College Place Playground Association's baseball program. She was a member of College Place Presbyterian Church.
Sue is survived by her daughters, Carlene Mercado of Walla Walla, Karen "Sissy" Mercado of Renton, Shari Bjorn of Newcastle, and her other kids; Brenda Roquet of Walla Walla, Blair Mercado of Oxnard, Calif., Bryce Mercado of Los Angeles, and Blaine Mercado of Renton; 11 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and her niece, Aileen Oye of Lake Stevens, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, Corey Mercado, her sister, Hattie Ohashi, and her parents.
A memorial service for Sue will be held Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011 at 1 p.m. at Herring Funeral Home. The Reverend Zedell Jackson, Jr. will be officiating. Family and friends are welcome to attend a short graveside service at 11:30 a.m at Mt. View Cemetery, prior to the memorial service.
