WALLA WALLA -- Firefighters from Fire District 4 responded to a vehicle fire in the 800 block of Airport Way on at 9:27 p.m. on Monday.
Two engines arrived to find a 1986 Jeep Cherokee fully engulfed in flames, said Chief Rocky Eastman. "It was a total loss. It started as some mechanical failure, a small fire underneath (the hood)."
The owner, who was not injured, told officials the Cherokee had overheated and he had pulled over to let it cool when it caught fire. There were several rounds of ammunition in the rig -- which is used as a farm vehicle -- which began firing before firefighters arrived.
The scene was cleared by 10 p.m.
