WALLA WALLA - Community residents have a second opportunity to host a potential professional baseball player during the Sweets 2011 summer season.
Host families are being sought. Sweets players live with local families during the summer season to help offset living expenses. The program was launched in 2010 with immediate success.
"Having the Sweets stay with local families is another way to incorporate the team into the Walla Walla community," said Sweets manager of community relations Beth Swanson. "It is a benefit to both the player and the families who participate. Our players look forward to living with local families while they are playing baseball for the Sweets."
Rosanna Morgan and Debbie Dumont were host mothers whose experiences exemplify what can be expected.
"Zach [Clanton] is a part of our family and gave my children an older brother experience they could not have had otherwise," said Morgan. "Departing was such sweet sorrow, but we keep in touch regularly keeping up with what's going on. We look forward to the coming season and await a new family addition."
In addition to being invited to a private host family and player barbecue at the end of the season, host families will also be recognized on-field for their contributions to the Sweets organization and their individual players. Each member of the host family household will receive a general admission season ticket and 20 percent off all merchandise and apparel in the Sweets Shoppe during the season.
Community members are invited to attend the host family informational meeting at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 22 at the Sherwood Athletic Center at Whitman College. The meeting will be in the upstairs portion of the building, just off the main foyer on the Harper Joy Theatre side. Members of the Sweets' front office and host family coordinators for the 2011 season will be in available to answer questions and provide insight into the experience.
