COLLEGE PLACE - It looked like it was going to going to be a good night for the Walla Walla Valley Academy girls basketball team, but a stellar fourth quarter from Dayton landed the Bulldogs a 45-41 victory in Southeast 2B basketball in College Place Thursday.

WWVA (1-12 overall, 0-8 league) jumped out to 9-4 lead in the first four minutes on a run capped by a Kristi Buell bucket before Buell scored all 10 of the Knights' second quarter points to maintain a 22-19 lead at intermission.

"WWVA played so well," said Dayton head coach Scott Hudson. "I think we've both clearly improved since the last time we met."

WWVA stretched the lead to 10 by the end of the third quarter before Dayton stormed back.

"Dayton turned up the pressure," said WWVA head coach Monty Buell. "The game as a whole was good for us, but the last five minutes cost us."

Dayton seized a 42-40 lead on a McKayla Bickelhaupt free throw and a put back runner by Nicole Lambert just past the three minute mark in the fourth quarter.

"I think tonight was a learning experience for us," Hudson said. "We were outplayed for a lot of the game, but we stayed focused."

Another Lambert bucket pushed the lead to four with less than two minutes remaining and the Bulldogs (4-11, 3-5) held on to the lead.

A 7-for-23 night at the line plagued WWVA.

"It came down to free throws," coach Buell said. "We missed a lot. We would have won this game if we shot better at the line."

Dayton was lead by 13 points by Bickelhaupt, while Buell's 15 was the high for WWVA.

Up next for Dayton is a home game against Asotin, while WWVA is off until a Feb. 2 contest at Waitsburg-Prescott.
