COLLEGE PLACE - Dayton and Walla Walla Valley Academy's boys basketball teams played an evenly-matched game for about 14 minutes Thursday night, but then Dayton closed the first half on a 6-0 run and dominated the third quarter en route to a 57-34 Southeast 2B win.

It was a 16-14 game with two minutes remaining in the second quarter before Dayton pushed its lead to eight before the break as WWVA (6-8 overall, 2-7 in league) struggled to find the bottom of the bucket, suffering a three-and-a-half minute drought.

"We just couldn't figure out a way to hit our shots," said WWVA head coach Scott Wagner. "When we went cold they started running, and that's when they pulled away."

Dayton (7-8, 4-4) outscored WWVA 25-10 in the third quarter.

"We really made some good adjustments after the half," said Dayton head coach Roy Ramirez. "Our guys got out and ran the way we want."

The fourth quarter was academic as Dayton held on to its 21 point lead, paced by 14 points from Kroft Sunderland, while Matthew Moore topped WWVA with 11.

"There are a lot of things for me to be proud of our team about," Ramirez said. "We blocked out well, and we made a solid effort."

As for WWVA, the game served as a learning experience.

"We're a young team so every night we try to improve," Wagner said. "Our team had some opportunities, but we couldn't knock them down."

Dayton is slated to host Asotin tonight, while WWVA heads to Waitsburg-Prescott on Feb. 2.
