WALLA WALLA - The DeSales girls Southeast 2B League basketball team trailed 7-0 in the early going and stormed back to take a 10-9 lead at the end of the first quarter against Liberty Christian.
The Irish rally in the first period and then never fell behind the rest of the night, winning 44-36.
The Irish run-and-gun style of basketball worked this evening, amassing 11 team steals and forcing 21 Liberty Christian turnovers - on the way to dropping in four three-pointers.
Irish coach Tim Duncan was proud of his girls' efforts in the game.
"We played really hard," Duncan said, "We didn't do everything right but we made up for our mistakes with our effort."
Nine different Irish players scored and four of them scored five points or more.
Senior Erin Giusti was team-high in scoring with 10 points, Annie Higgins added nine, Ali Zander dropped in seven and Stephanie Ferrel scored five, before leaving with an injury.
"We've been balanced in scoring the last few games," Duncan said, "We have been scoring up and down the lineup, hopefully that will continue."
Zander lead the Irish in rebounds with seven.
The Irish did commit 18 fouls in the game and put the Patriots in the penalty early in the fourth quarter.
It was due to their pressing style, of constant heat on the opponent, when they have the ball.
"Pressing is one of our strengths," Duncan said, "We work so hard at it. Our steals don't always come on the initial pressure and trap.
"But then we the other team tries to take the ball up the floor fast, we hustle, get back and track down some stray passes and scoop up some steals from behind."
Leading the way for Liberty Christian - was Hannah Berges with 13 points and Hannah Croskrey with eight.
"Liberty Christian is a good team," Duncan said, "and both Hannahs are great players."
The win improves the Irish to 11-3 overall and 7-1 in league.
The league record is good enough for second, behind only undefeated in 2B action, Waitsburg-Prescott.
The Irish will get another shot at W-P next Saturday, at their place.
The first meeting between the two teams occurred in Walla Walla and W-P won by eleven points.
First, the Irish will travel to Asotin to take them at a league game Friday.
