Second quarter spells disaster for Wa-Hi girls

WENATCHEE - A disastrous second quarter doomed Wa-Hi in Columbia Basin Big Nine 4A girls basketball action Saturday.

Wenatchee outscored Wa-Hi 19-1 in the second and went on to post a 46-29 win.

The Blue Devils led 10-8 after one, but could do nothing right in the second period.

"Wenatchee likes to push," Wa-Hi coach Jill Meliah said. "We stopped moving our feet and talking. They would score and get into their press. We'd turn the ball over and they would score (again). We couldn't get out of the cycle."

And to make it worse, Torri Crawford landed hard and had to leave the game. Crawford, a 6-foot-2 post, did not return.

The Blue Devils regrouped to play Wenatchee to a virtual stand off, 19-18 Panthers, in the second half, but the second-quarter hole was too much to dig out of.

"We put together three pretty good quarters," Meliah said. "That's frustrating to play three good ones and lose by 17, and we did play better in the second half, but the damage had been done."

Michaela George scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Panthers. The win kept the Panthers solidly in fourth spot in the league.

Wa-Hi got 10 points from Jaiden Hodnefield and Sydney Christensen grabbed a game-high six rebounds for the Blue Devils.

Wa-Hi drops to 3-7 in league and will travel to Yakima for a Tuesday match with Ike.

Wa-Hi is fifth in the Big Nine and with a win at Ike will clinch a first-round post season match with the Panthers.

"We have to take care of business and limit our mental mistakes," Meliah said. "Torri will be sore but should be OK."
