Northwest Grain Growers gives $100K to charities, colleges

With another good financial year behind them, Northwest Grain Growers, Inc.'s board of directors recently voted to donate $100,000 of the cooperative's non-member profits to Walla Walla Valley charities and to colleges that help work with the farming community in Walla Walla.

One-fourth of the donation will be split between Washington State University's wheat breeding program, Oregon State University's wheat breeding program, and to Walla Walla Community College's agriculture program.

A committee appointed by the board reviewed applications from various community charities. The committee recommended the balance of $75,000 go to 16 charities that have a priority of helping needy people in the Walla Walla Valley.

Recipients were Blue Mountain Action Council, Blue Mountain Chapter of the Red Cross, Blue Mountain Heart to Heart, Children's Home Society of Walla Walla, Christian Aid Center, Helpline, The Cardinal's Nest of Waitsburg, Walla Walla Council of Campfire USA, Community Center for Youth, Walla Walla Community Hospice, Friends of Children of Walla Walla, Lillie Rice Center, Retired Senior Volunteer Program, The Salvation Army, Young Life and the YWCA.
