WALLA WALLA - Outdoor burn bans are in effect today due to hot, dry weather.
Umatilla County authorities have banned burning in all areas not covered by a fire district. The ban will continue through Sunday.
All agriculture and outdoor burning in Walla Walla County has also been prohibited for today by the state Department of Ecology. How long that ban will continue will be decided on a day-to-day basis, according to Ecology's Daily Burn Decision Hot Line.
The bans are due to a red flag warning issued by the National Weather Service. The warning is issued when a combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures create explosive fire growth potential.
According to the weather service, a cooler westerly flow will bring lower temperatures into the area by Saturday. An upper low will approach the Pacific Northwest coast on Tuesday and Wednesday with a chance of showers and thunderstorms.
