Bears open own tourney with five-inning victory

Jake Campeau gives up just three hits in the 11-0 victory over the Jerome Cyclones Thursday.

WALLA WALLA - Jake Campeau tossed a three-hitter and struck out six Thursday night to lead the Walla Walla Bears to an 11-0 victory over the Jerome Cyclones in the opening session of the Walla Walla Sweet Invitational baseball tournament.

Campeau's gem at Walla Walla Community College's Tausick Way field was called after five innings due to the mercy rule.

"He did a really good job of shutting them down and settling into the game," Walla Walla coach Brian Kitamura said.

After squandering a bases-loaded, no-out opportunity in the first inning, Walla Walla plated a pair of runs in the second inning when Conner Holbrook delivered a two-out single to center field.

Neal Schuck capped a three-run third inning for the Bears with a two-out, two-RBI single to right.

Walla Walla scored twice in the fourth on bases-loaded walks and added four more runs in the fifth inning - one on a Cyclones' error and the latter three on free passes with the sacks occupied.

In all, the Bears received 15 bases on balls from Jerome pitchers.

"It's nice when we get that many free passes, but we can't rely on that," Kitamura said.

Vic Mata had three hits for Walla Walla. Schuck and Holbrook added two apiece.

The Bears have a pair of games tonight at WWCC. They will lock horns with Reality Sports at six and the Capital Jr. Senators at 8:30.

Those evening tilts are two of 16 games on today's tournament schedule.

Early contests played today included matchups featuring Yakima against Pullman, Hodgen Distributing versus Pullman, and Hodgen against Seattle Select Purple at WWCC.

Pride Baseball opposed the Seattle Rainiers, Hanford squared off with Boise, and Cobras Baseball Club took on the Spokane Northstars at Borleske Stadium.

Scheduled games at Murr Sports Park had Spokane battling Alpenrose Dairy and Jerome slugging it out with Reality Sports.
