GRESHAM, Ore. - The Milton-Freewater All-Star Little League 11-12 softball team opened state tournament play with two victories here Saturday and Sunday.
Milton-Freewater shut out Brookings Harbor, 7-0, on Saturday behind the pitching of Mallory Copeland, Kaitlyn Slusarenko and Tabitha Heckman. The trio allowed four hits in the game.
Rachael Lyon had two runs scored, with Copeland getting two RBI on two hits.
In Sunday's 7-2 victory over Hermiston, Copeland pitched a complete-game with seven strikeouts and also had an RBI on two hits.
Milton-Freewater opened up the game with a four-run first inning. Lyon and Slusarenko walked, Copeland drove Lyon in and then Micha Fortune drove in Slusarenko. Isabelle Dillow then singled in Copeland, and Fortune later scored as M-F rolled to the win.
Fortune finished the game 3-for-3, while Dillow was 3-for-4.
The M-F squad, half of which was on the team which won the 9-10 state title the last two years, next faces South Salem-Sprague at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the state semifinals. A victory there would put them in the championship game at 6 p.m. Thursday, and a state title advances M-F to the regional tournament in San Bernardino, Calif., later this month.
