WALLA WALLA - Donnie Santos blasted a pair of three-run home runs to help power Pride Baseball to a 14-2 victory over the Walla Walla Bears in the championship game of the Walla Walla Sweet Invitational baseball tournament Sunday afternoon.
The lopsided triumph at Walla Walla Community College's Tausick Way field successfully ended a perfect 6-0 tournament run for Pride Baseball.
"That's the best we've played the whole weekend by a mile," said Pride manager Kent Schaefer, who was a tight end on Walla Walla Community College's 1981 NWAACC championship football team. "We had not been hitting it very well, but we always believe our guys are capable. In the last couple of weeks, (the players) are starting to believe it."
Pride Baseball pushed one run across in the top of the first inning before the Bears responded with a pair of tallies in the home half of inning one.
Jake Campeau tied the contest with an RBI single to center field and the tie-breaking run scored on a wild pitch.
Santos gave Pride Baseball the lead for good in the second inning with the first of his two multiple-run dingers.
Pride Baseball added two more runs in the third inning and eight in the fifth - three of which scored on a Santos homer that gave Pride an 11-2 lead.
Santos, Jon Mercer, Michael Marriott and Mitch Viydo had two hits apiece for Pride Baseball, which had 11 base knocks on the day compared with five for Walla Walla.
"It was a good day against a couple of good pitchers (Matt Watson and Matt Wujek)," Schaefer said.
The Bears got hits from Campeau, Neal Schuck, Conner Holbrook, Brett Christina, and Mike Pontarolo.
"We didn't get the result that we wanted," Walla Walla manager Brian Kitamura said, "but our guys played good baseball this weekend. Our guys did a real good job of making in-game adjustments."
The Bears host Hanford for a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Thursday at Murr Sports Park.
