A Walla Walla meat processor's bacon won the hearts of the judges last month during the American Cured Meat Championships.
Haun's Meat and Sausage of Walla Walla was awarded third place, champion, in the Country Bacon class at the national event June 16-18 in Reno, Nev. The championships were held in conjunction with the 72nd Convention of the American Association of Meat Processors, North America's largest meat trade organization.
The event draws hundreds of entries from across the country each year. This year's field had 536 entries in 26 product categories, according to the announcement.
Entries were judged on aroma, flavor, eye appeal, color and texture.
Haun's Meat and Sausage, 5042 Stateline Road, was started in 1996 by Jerry and Dean Haun. Jerry Haun is a third-generation meat processor with nearly 35 years in the business. A new employee has joined the team at Community Bank and another one has been promoted.
Ken Hui recently joined the company as vice president regional manager for the Joseph, Ore.,-based bank. Hui, a resident of the community for more than five decades after immigrating with his family as a child from Hong Kong, has a bachelor's in business administration from the University of Washington. He got his start in banking at Seattle First National Bank, now known as Bank of America. He and wife Soo operated a family restaurant for 27 years here before he returned to banking. Hui has served on the board of the Walla Walla Valley Chamber of Commerce, chaired the Eastgate Business Coalition and has been involved in both Rotary and Exchange Club.
Sandi Rowe, Community Bank's branch manager in Milton-Freewater, was recently promoted to assistant vice president. Manager of the branch since 2006, she began her banking career 21 years ago as a teller in the Joseph office. She has also served as operations supervisor and operations support specialist. She is an active board member for the Milton-Freewater Area Chamber of Commerce.
