WALLA WALLA - Eric Ansett of Spokane and Jeff Marcum of West Richland matched 1-under-par 71s Thursday at the Walla Walla Country Club to share the first-round lead in the 19th annual Banner Bank Invitational Junior golf tournament.
Ansett and Marcum were just one shot up in the boys 15-17 age division, with Walla Walla's Ryan Baumgart and Richland's Cole Lorenzo in hot pursuit after shooting identical even-par rounds of 72. It was one more shot back to Corey Beaver of Post Falls, Idaho, who fired a 73, followed by a four-player logjam at 2-over 74 heading into today's second round of the 36-hole tourney.
Drew Ness of Tualatin, Ore., the grandson of Don and Jean Parker of Walla Walla, came in at 77 and was in a four-way tie for 16th place among the 34 players in the division. Rick Atwood of Walla Walla shot 78 and was tied for 20th place, Dean Atkinson of Walla Walla carded an 80 and was tied for 23rd, and Joel Meyers of Pomeroy finished with an 81 and shared 26th place.
Kristen Hansen of Spokane and Kristin Strankman of Richland shared the girls 15-17 age division lead at 75, three shots over par. They held a two-shot lead over Kaceelyn Pouttu of Kellogg, Idaho, who shot 77 and was alone in third place, two strokes better then Kelsey Aiello of Pasco and Kelci Robertson of Richland, who were tied for fourth place with a pair of 79s.
Jessica Huntsman of Walla Walla turned in an 84 and was tied for eighth place with Neydeen Martinez of Pasco in the field of 16.
Walla Walla's Emily Baumgart was in command of the girls 12-14 age group after recording a first-round 83. Baumgart's score was good for a 12-shot lead over Jalayne Martinez of Pasco in the seven-placer division and would have been good enough for eighth place in the girls 15-17 group.
Teresa Meyers of Pomeroy shot 110 and was in seventh place in the girls 12-14 group.
In the boys 12-14 division, the first-round lead belonged to Michael Brutocao of Spokane, who carded a 3-over-par 75 and was two shots ahead of Aaron Seabrook of East Wenatchee. Seabrook's 77 was one shot better than Blake Ellingsen of Spokane, Quinton Parnell of Richland and Holden Backes of Yakima, all deadlocked at 78.
Walla Walla's Scott Kimball shot 85, 10 strokes off the pace and all alone in ninth place in the field of 12 players.
