Walla Walla Bruins play Hanford Flames to twin bill split

Walla Walla wins the Junior Legion opener, 8-5, before Hanford scores six eighth-inning runs in the nightcap for the 12-10 victory.

WALLA WALLA - Sean Hollenbeck had three hits and Luke Reardon contributed a two-run, fifth-inning double as the Walla Walla Bruins built a pair of five-run leads and held on for an 8-5 victory over the Hanford Flames in the opening game of a Central Washington Junior American Legion League baseball doubleheader Thursday night at Walla Walla Community College's Tausick Way field.

The Flames rallied for six runs in the eighth inning of the nightcap and withstood a Bruins' rally for a 12-10 triumph.

Walla Walla is now 13-7 in league play. Hanford is 15-11.

The Bruins broke a scoreless tie in game one with four runs in the second inning. Mike Lesmeister brought in the first run with a double off the right-center field fence and Moe Handcox knocked home run No. 3 with an infield hit.

Walla Walla's second and fourth runs of the frame scored on Hanford errors.

The Flames scored their first run in the fourth.

The Bruins responded with two in their half of the inning - one on a bases-loaded walk and another on a passed ball - to take a 6-1 lead.

Both teams tallied twice in the fifth inning. Reardon's two-bagger found the left-center alley and put the Bruins up 8-3.

"We have some kids maturing offensively," Walla Walla coach Jason Parsons said. "Luke has shown a ton of growth this summer."

The Flames and Bruins mirrored each other with four-run rallies in the first inning of game two. Taylor Lemke drove in the first two Walla Walla runs with a double to right-center. Cody Furstenberg and Hollenbeck followed with bases-loaded walks.

The Bruins used a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Hollenbeck in the third inning to take a 6-4 edge.

Hanford scored once in both the fourth and sixth innings before exploding in the eighth.

Walla Walla pulled within two in the last half of inning eight on RBI singles by Furstenberg and Eggers, a Handcox double, and a Hollenbeck fielder's choice.

But with two on and two out, Reardon hit into a six-unassisted fielder's choice to end the game.

"We fell anemic for about four innings, which allowed them to get back in the game," Parsons said. "Will (Parnicky) stepped in relief and did a fine job."

The Bruins play at Eastmont on Saturday.
