CHENEY, Wash. - Walla Walla Pacific emerged as one of four remaining undefeated teams here Sunday at the Washington Little League 10-11 state baseball tournament.
The Walla Wallans overcame a seven-run pratfall in the third inning in which they committed three defensive errors and overtook Glenwood of Vancouver 12-9 to reach the semifinal round of the winners' bracket. Pacific next plays Mercer Island Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Walla Walla led 1-0 after one inning of play Sunday and 6-2 after plating five runs in the top of the third. But Glenwood took advantage of Pacific's defensive miscues to score seven times in the bottom of that inning and move out to a 9-6 lead.
Pacific got one run back in the fourth inning and then knotted the score at 9-9 with a two-spot in the fifth. Two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases and Ben Ortiz followed with a two-run double.
Then, in the sixth inning, Devon Oliver singled, took second on a passed ball, advanced to third on Jack Weigand's sacrifice bunt and scored the go-ahead run on Garrett Elsom's triple. Scott Golden followed with an RBI double for one insurance run and later scored on a passed ball for another.
Levi Haen, who relieved starting pitcher Oliver in the midst of the seven-run third inning and blanked Glenwood the rest of the way, earned the victory. He allowed three hits, struck out four and didn't walk a batter, and most important of all his defense was perfect, including a game-ending double play.
Ortiz, Oliver, Golden, Elsom and Mason Knowles each collected a pair of hits in the game as 11 Walla Walla batters contributed to Pacific's 16-hit offensive attack.
If Pacific wins Tuesday, it will play Wednesday at 3 p.m. in a game that will match the final two unbeaten teams in the 13-team field. If Walla Walla loses Tuesday, it will face a loser-out game Wednesday at 6 p.m.
