Joanne Schaeffer
Aug. 23, 1922 - July 15, 2011

Joanne C. Mersereau Schaeffer, passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on July 15, 2011, with family in attendance. She was raised in Seattle and spent her summers at a family cabin on Lake Sammamish. After graduating from Queen Anne High School in 1940, she attended the University of Washington, where she was a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. In her young-adult
life, from high school days until the birth of her first child, she worked at Fredrick and Nelson in Seattle and the telephone company.

In 1943, she married Robert H. Schaeffer, a graduate of the University of Washington and later, a graduate of the University of Oregon Medical School. In 1953, Joanne and Bob moved to Walla Walla, where they raised their family.

Joanne was actively involved in a variety of Walla Walla arts organizations, including the Walla Walla Symphony, Carnegie Center for the Arts and Walla Walla's Community Concert series, where she and Bob hosted many artist receptions. She loved her family first; she also loved gardening, flower arranging, cooking, music and snow-skiing. Joanne was very active with Four Seasons, where her "joie de vive"
shone brightly. For nearly 50 years, she enjoyed weekly bridge gatherings with her much-loved Jolly Girls friends. Later in life, she became an avid Seattle Mariners fan.

She is survived by her husband, Bob, of 67 years; and four children, Robert (Maureen) Schaeffer of Portland, Mary (Richard) Neel of Seattle, Janet (John) Gifford, of La Conner, Wash., and Ann (Kelly)
Tucker of Lake Oswego, Ore. Additionally, she is survived by 13 adoring grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, and all who knew her were graced by her presence. A private family gathering will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, at Joanne's request remembrances may be made to the Walla Walla Symphony.
