TURNER, Ore. - Milton-Freewater's 14U Junior softball team won the Oregon Junior Softball championship, 4-0, against Forest Grove on Thursday.
The win moves them into August's Western Regional Tournament, where they'll open against Hawaii on Aug. 4 in Marana, Ariz.
"We had no runs scored against us in the whole tournament," said coach Willie Streeter. "That was perfect. It was a good, tight game from both teams, and this was actually the lowest score we had."
The girls outscored their opponents 45-0 in 24 innings of play at the state tournament.
Colette Robert pitched the complete game for Milton-Freewater, and added a solo home run in the effort.
For the team, there was a little redemption in the win.
The same group of girls lost the state tournament two years ago on the same field, Streeter said.
Milton-Freewater topped Centennial, 20-0, on Saturday, to open the tournament, then beat Park Rose 12-0 on Tuesday. They defeated Columbia 9-0 Wednesday to play in the title game.
"The girls were tickled," he said. "They've worked so hard all year long. This is something some of these girls have been thinking about for two years, and they've worked their butts off."
Now, they head to Arizona for an Aug. 4 matchup with Hawaii in their first trip to the Western Regional. Milton-Freewater also won the silver bracket at the Walla Walla Sweet Onion tournament.
"They've put together one heck of a year," Streeter said. "They're working their butts off and they deserve it."
Team members are Katie Woodhall, Adriene Streeter, Stefanie Copeland, Jayde Mandujano, Robert, Brooke Kralman, Makayla Kelly, Nicole Hendley, Taylor Entze, Hannah Bullock and Abigail Bigger. They're managed by Lance Bullock and coached by Willie Streeter and Kevin Robert.
