Walla Walla Bruins sweep Pasco

PASCO - The Walla Walla Bruins swept through East Pasco to finish the regular season on Thursday, winning 11-1 and 10-9 in American AA Legion baseball and securing sixth place in the league.

The Bruins put East Pasco away 11-1 in five innings in game one, on top of four Pasco errors.

But Pasco held on throughout game two. The Bruins led 1-0 after the first inning, but Pasco put up five runs in the second for a lead. Walla Walla scored once in the third, then Pasco put up three more in the fourth and one in the top of the fifth for a 9-2 advantage.

The Bruins weren't ready to concede the loss. They exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth, bringing it to a 9-all tie.

Neither team scored in the sixth, and East Pasco was silent in the top of the seventh.

With extra innings on the line, Walla Walla's Sean Hollenbeck led off with a sharply-hit single, then Josh Eggers singled to put runners on first and second.

Taylor Lemke hit a fielder's choice, heading back to the bench but putting Hollenbeck on third.

Cody Furstenberg put down a "perfectly squeezed bunt" to score Hollenbeck and win the game, said Bruins coach Jason Parsons.

"It was pretty dang exciting," Parsons said.

The win ends the Bruins' regular season at 30-16 and 16-10 in league. They're in sixth place heading into Saturday's eight-team district tournament.

The Bruins open with West Valley, from Yakima, at 4 p.m. Saturday at Richland High.

Three teams will advance from districts to the state round in Spokane.
