WALLA WALLA - A Milton-Freewater man was assaulted Friday night in an incident that Sheriff's deputies believe was an interrupted attempt to steal a vehicle.

According to a Walla Walla County Sheriff's report, David Martinez had driven his son and a friend to the area of Heritage and Detour roads at around 11:30 p.m. to help fix his son's flat tire.

When the three arrived, they found the driver-side window smashed with a rock and a woman hiding in a ditch about 30 feet away.

While the three questioned the woman, a man appeared from behind a bush and then began leaving the scene with the woman.

Martinez told the man not to leave because he was calling police, which is when the man turned and punched Martinez in the face, according to the report.

The victim said the unknown man then threatened that he had a gun and left with the woman.

Deputies said the ignition on the vehicle had been tampered with and the couple may have been trying to steal it.

Martinez was bleeding from his injury, but did not require emergency medical attention.

The description of the man was a white male, 18-19, 5-foot-11-inches.

The woman was described as 18-19, 5-foot-5-inches and said her name was Elissa.
