Marguerite E. "Margie" Ballard, Milton-Freewater, passed away May 29, 2011, at her home at the age of 86 years. Funeral services will be Saturday, June 4, at 10 a.m. at the Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home in Milton-Freewater with Pastor Steve Lyons of the First Christian Church officiating. Concluding services and interment in the Milton-Freewater Cemetery. There will be a gathering for family and friends at the Rebekah Lodge on North Main across the street from Terry's OK Tire Store. Memorial contributions may be made to the Walla Walla Community Hospice through the funeral home.

Margie was born Sept. 5, 1924, in Walla Walla, the daughter of George W. and Mabel V. Caufield Smith. She was the third of 10 children. She grew up in the Walla Walla Valley and graduated from Walla Walla High School in 1942. On Oct. 5, 1944, she married Vernon L. Ballard in Prosser, Wash. The couple have resided in the Milton-Freewater area since 1958. Margie worked as a homemaker. She was a member of the "Lunch Bunch," a group of ladies who had been meeting for lunch for over 25 years. Margie enjoyed selling her kitchen towels at various craft shows in the area and collecting owls. Mr. Ballard preceded her in death in October 1978.

She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Verna Ballard of Burbank, Judy and Larry Mahanna of Elgin, Ore., Marty and Myrlon Roloff of Milton-Freewater; two sons and daughter-in-law, James and Pat Ballard of California, George Ballard of Milton-Freewater; five sisters and brothers-in-law, Frances and John Wright, Lavonne Reser, Shari and Douglas Richmond all of Walla Walla, Lilly Figgins of Bonners Ferry, Ida., Louise and Robert Andrews of Richland, Wash.; seven grandchildren, Leah Ishaug, Lora Gibbs, Michele Reece, John Ballard, Josh Ballard, James Ballard and Cory DeMotts; 10 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Margie was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Elmer and George Smith; two sisters, Grace Jessee and Glenadine Smith.
