WALLA WALLA - Fire District 4 auxiliary will begin a survey of bridges in the district this week to make sure they can support tankers in an emergency.
Three auxiliary members will be visiting bridge sites to identify spans that may not be able to support the weight of a 50,000-pound water tender, said District Chief Rocky Eastman. The survey information will allow the department to be ready to use a smaller truck or alternate routes in the event a bridge may not be able to carry the weight of a large tanker.
While bridges on public roads will be looked at, "mainly our focus is going to be on private property (bridges)," Eastman said.
Homeowners who have a private driveway bridge that is not easy to locate are asked to call the fire district at 529-1282 to assist the survey.
