Griz split with Diamondjaxx, Bees over weekend

YAKIMA - Octavio Preciado's third hit of the game, a two-run double in the seventh inning, lifted the Walla Walla Griz to a 10-9 victory over West Valley's Bees here Sunday in the second game of a Junior American Legion baseball doubleheader.

West Valley claimed the opener 9-7.

It was the second twin bill split in as many days for the Griz, who scored in six of the seven innings to defeat Pendleton's Diamondjaxx 12-6 to salvage a split Saturday at the Blue Mountain Community College field in Pendleton. The Diamondjaxx won Saturday's opener 4-2.

The pair of splits left Walla Walla with a 2-4 season record heading into the Griz's annual tournament that will be played this weekend on four different fields in Walla Walla. The Griz will play two games Friday and two Saturday, all on the WWCC diamond, with Sunday's schedule undetermined.

Nine visiting teams will be on hand for the three-day tournament, which will also feature games at Murr Field on the Wa-Hi campus, Ray Lane Field at DeSales and Borleske Stadium.

Tyson Snarr was the Griz's hits leader on the weekend. After collecting one of his team's two hits in Saturday's opener, Snarr drilled two singles and a double, drove home two runs and scored three times in the second game. And he had three more singles, one RBI and a pair of runs scored in Sunday's first-game loss to West Valley.

David Pontarolo also had four hits on Saturday, including three singles, two RBIs and three runs scored in the nightcap.

Adam Mathews and Zach Zehner had two hits each in Saturday's second game, and Mathews picked up two more hits and Zehner one in Sunday's nightcap.

Elias Martinez singled twice, drove home two runs and scored once to lead the Griz in Sunday's first-game loss.
