WALLA WALLA -- Whitman College history professor and lacrosse coach David Schmitz has won the Sam Sadtler Service Award, presented by the Men's Collegiate Lacrosse Association/United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association.

The award recognizes an individual who has displayed outstanding service to the MCLA/USLIA community, according to a news release.

Schmitz also was named 2011 Pacific Northwest Collegiate Lacrosse League Division 2 coach of the year.

"Dr. Schmitz is the founder of the PNCLL and has been the model of coaching success in our conference. His teams have advanced to the playoffs every year since 1995, when the playoff format was established under his leadership," PNCLL League President Jason Stockton said in the release.

"I've always admired the way he seems to get the most out of his players, and I know his teams' successes over the years are a direct result of his sideline prowess."
