Thomas A. Butler, (Tom), passed away Friday, June 3, 2011, at Hillside Manor due to complications from dementia.
Tom was born on Oct. 19, 1935, in Kingsville, Mo., to Abraham O. and Nellie (Boman) Butler. Tom graduated from Walla Walla High School in 1954. Tom went on to graduate with both a bachelor's and a master's degree in geology from the University of Idaho. He achieved the rank of PCF5 in the U.S. Army and served from 1959 to 1965, serving 13 months from 1960-1961 in Korea.
He married Louanna (Flynn) Butler in Helena on June 5, 1963. He belonged to AIME, Montana Mining Association and various other mining organizations. Tom was a devoted exploration geologist; he was honored to be a part of the discovery at Green's Creek, Alaska. He worked for several exploration companies in Idaho, Washington, Alaska and Montana. In his last years of working he was a Realtor at Fidelity Real Estate.
He was preceded in death by his father, mother, and five siblings. Tom is survived by his wife, Louanna, of Missoula; son, Ron (Laurie) Butler; and grandsons, Joshua and Jakob of Anchorage, Alaska; daughter, Holly (Tom) Anderson; and twin granddaughters, Hannah and Madison of Urbandale, Iowa; sister, Pauline (Jack) Nichols of Walla Walla; and 11 nieces and nephews.
A graveside service with military honors will be held Monday, June 13, at 1 p.m. at the Western Montana Veterans Cemetery. A reception will follow at the family home. The family suggests memorials be sent in Tom's name to Hospice of Missoula, 800 Kensington, Suite 204, Missoula, MT 59801 or Alzheimer's Association 3010 11th Ave N., Billings, MT 59101. Arrangements are under the direction of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
