Muriel F. Fairchild passed away May 26, 2011, at Walla Walla General Hospital. A memorial service will be held at the Walla Walla University Church on Saturday, June 18, at 2 p.m.
Muriel was born in LaComb, Alberta, on Nov. 12, 1934, the daughter of Will and Annie McCloud. They later moved to Grandview Flats, British Columbia, where she attended elementary school. After graduating from high school in McBride, B.C., in 1952, Muriel attended Canadian Union College in Alberta until she moved to California to attend the St. Helena Sanitarium School of Nursing from 1954-56. She went back to Canada where she worked as a nurse until she moved to Walla Walla in 1962. While working at Walla Walla General hospital, she completed a B.S in nursing at Walla Walla College in 1965. During this time she also met Ed Fairchild, and on June 12, 1966, they were married in Armstrong B.C. From 1970 to her retirement in 1994, Muriel taught in the nursing program of Walla Walla Community College.
Muriel was a longtime member of the Walla Walla University Church where she served as a deaconess for many years and as head deaconess. She was known for her deep compassion for people in need and her generosity with her time and resources. She will be missed.
Muriel is survived by her husband, Ed Fairchild of Walla Walla; stepdaughters Sandra Fairchild, Deborah Patterson and Deanna Adams of Portland; stepson Gary Fairchild of Portland; and a brother in Canada.
