Eugene (Gene) Wilbur Daniels, 80, died May 30, 2011. Gene was born
July 8, 1930, in Portland, Ore., to George and Theresa (Florkosky) Daniels. He grew up in Portland and attended Benson High School. He married Clara "Jinny" Aspholm on Dec. 28, 1951, in Vancouver, Wash. In 1956, their daughter, Jan, was
Gene worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for over 40 years. While working for the railroad, his family moved more than 40 times within Washington. During their multiple moves, Gene built and remodeled
homes in Puyallup, Vancouver, Tacoma and Walla
Walla. They finally settled in Walla Walla in 1979, when he took a job in Hinkle, Ore., working as round house foreman. After retiring from the railroad in 1991, Gene and Jinny enjoyed traveling up and down the West Coast and spent winters in Southern California until 2008.
Gene enjoyed working in his garage fixing and restoring cars, woodworking, fishing, reading Louis L'Amour books and playing cards with family and friends. He was a member of the Blue Mountain
Community Church, and past member of car clubs in Walla Walla.
He is survived by his wife, Jinny of Walla Walla; granddaughter, Melinda Erickson of Tacoma; grandson, Christopher Erickson of Walla Walla; sisters, Sue (Daniels) Mize Lafont of Walla Walla and Linda (Daniels) Zimet of Hillsboro, Ore.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Jan (Daniels) Erickson; sister, Joyce (Daniels) Summers; brother George Daniels Jr. and wife Carma; and brother-in-law, George Mize.
A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, June 20, 2011, at Blue Mountain Community Church in Walla Walla. Memorial contributions may be made to the Jan Erickson Lifesaver Fund at Providence St. Mary Regional Cancer Center through the Herring
