YAKIMA - The Walla Walla Blues went 3-1 over the weekend in Walla Walla Valley Select baseball play.
The Blues traveled to Moses Lake and beat the Crawdads, 11-5, Saturday, but dropped the second game, 9-8.
They swept the East Yakima Valley Redhawks, 18-2 and 26-3, on Sunday to complete the weekend.
The 11-5 win over the Crawdads was one of the better games the Blues have played this year, said coach Kevin McNeil.
"It was a great game," McNeil said. "It was the best we played all year against a good quality team. It was nice to see our bats come alive to go with a great pitching performance."
Lowden Smith was the winning pitcher for the Blues.
Game two was a battle, with the Blues falling behind early after a five-run first by the Crawdads.
Although they managed to tie it in the top of the fourth, Moses Lake answered with four more runs.
Cameron Spencer made a diving catch in the bottom of the third to keep the Blues in the game.
"It was probably the best catch we had seen in a long time by a kid," McNeil said. "We battled back by putting runners on base in each inning, but were unable to get the tying run across. We're proud of these kids and how they battled that adversity to almost win the game."
The two wins over the Redhawks on Sunday came with huge margins - 18-2 and 26-3 in five innings.
"It was nice to see the kids utilize the hitting technique that we had been preaching all week," McNeil said. "Our bats continue to be hot, which is nice to see."
The Blues travel to the Mt. Si BPA Classic tournament in Issaquah this weekend.
