WALLA WALLA -- A local man has pleaded guilty in Superior Court to possessing child pornography at his home last year.

Larry R. Mackler, 58, of 1826 Melrose St., entered guilty pleas Friday to three counts of first-degree and one count of second-degree possession of depictions of a minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct.

He initially had been charged with two additional counts of second-degree possession, but they will be dropped in exchange for his guilty pleas.

Mackler faces a standard-range prison term of about 61/2 to 81/2 years when he's sentenced later. But if experts determine he is amenable to sex-offender treatment, the prosecution in a plea agreement is recommending an alternative sentence be imposed that would incarcerate him for up to a year in the County Jail and require him to undergo outpatient sex-offender treatment when he's released.

Judge John Lohrmann isn't bound by anyone's sentencing recommendation.

The charges stemmed from a tip Walla Walla police received that led to a search of Mackler's residence Oct. 19.

Officials said they confiscated a computer, several floppy disks and printed images of young nude girls, some of whom were being raped.

In a statement to police Dec. 15, Mackler reportedly admitted possessing images of child pornography on the electronic devices and printing the pictures, but denied trading or selling them, or taking any such pictures.

He was arrested that day, but was released from the County Jail the following day pending further court proceedings. He was returned to jail Friday after pleading guilty.
