Peggy was born June 25, 1925, in Backus, Minn. Her parents were Earl and Rosina Blanchard Day. She attended local schools and moved to Dayton, where she married Frances Hoppe in the early 1950's. He died in 1964. She then married Asil Gaines, who later died. She enjoyed farming and was very interested in comparing her yields on the Johnson Hollow Farm with her neighbors. On recent rides with her grandson
through the farm fields she would perk-up and comment about the looks of the crops. She worked seasonally at Green Giant for many years and enjoyed hunting, gardening and quilting.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Dennis Laib of Urbana, Ill.; a sister, Velma Wearmouth of Alabama; grandson, John (Carolyn) Laib of Dayton and his children, Cathy, Patrick, Bonnie and
Levi; granddaughter, Traci (Henry) Lipps of Urbana, Ill., and her children, Sarah, Dexter, Hannah and Kendall. She was preceded in death by her husbands; parents; a brother, Earl Day; a sister, Mardel Kahlou; grandson, Tim Laib; and a longtime friend Curtis Willams.
