Walla Walla County Sheriff's Office restructures administrative staff

WALLA WALLA -- The Walla Walla County Sheriff's Office is restructuring its administrative staff, said Sheriff John Turner.

Turner said he has appointed Shanda Zessin, who has been business manager of the College Place Public Schools, to be head of the office's administrative division, Turner said. Zessin will start in the position Monday.

As part of the restructuring, the position of billing clerk was eliminated, Turner said. That job has been held since 1999 by Lora White, who was appointed by former Sheriff Mike Humphreys. White is the wife of Sheriff's Sgt. Bill White, who was a captain in the department when he ran against Turner in the November general election.

Among its tasks, the administrative division will handle administrative records, payroll, public reception and civil functions. At present it consists of four employees plus Zessin, but Turner said plans are to add a community service officer and two volunteer positions in the future.

Turner said he also hopes to initiate a college internship program. He said they will be designing the program on paper this year, then he plans to meet with each of the schools, Whitman College, Walla Walla University and Walla Walla Community College, to discuss how to carry the program forward.
