Missionary hardballers drop NWC doubleheader

TACOMA - Whitman College dropped a Northwest Conference baseball doubleheader to Puget Sound on Saturday in Tacoma, falling 6-4 in a nip-and-tuck game one before letting the Loggers take charge early in a 13-4 rout in the nightcap.

Whitman held the upper hand, and a 1-0 lead, through the first five innings of the opener.

The Missionaries plated the day's first run in the top of the third inning when Chris Andrews led off with a single and later scored on a two-out RBI-double off the bat off Cam Young.

Meanwhile, left-hander Jake Nelson blanked Puget Sound on two hits through five innings.

The Loggers threatened in the bottom of fourth, putting their two first batters on base via a hit-batter and walk.

After a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position, Nelson left them stranded, getting the first out on a strike-out and the second on an infield pop fly.

Nelson lost his control and his shutout in the bottom of the sixth. An infield single, base on balls and two wild pitches made it 1-1. After an RBI single gave the Loggers a 2-1 lead, Nelson issued another walk and was relieved by Justin Weeks.

Whitman also grabbed the early lead in Saturday's second game.

Jimmy Madden singled and Richards walked to set the stage in the top of the first. Casey Minnick singled in one run, and Cal Moyes and C.J. Pentland drew back-to-back walks to force home a second run.

That ended pitcher Jeff Walton's start after just two-thirds of an inning. Reliever Taylor Volz, facing a bases-loaded jam, got the next hitter on a ground-out to limit Whitman's early outburst.

The Loggers took the lead with four runs in the bottom of the second and then added four more tallies in the fourth inning.

Meanwhile, Volz held Whitman scoreless in innings two through six.

The two teams complete their three-game weekend series with a single game at noon today.
