TACOMA - Senior Erik Korsmo slugged a three-run homer in the fourth inning, giving Whitman College a 3-2 lead, but Puget Sound scored seven runs in its next two at-bats en route to a 12-4 Northwest Conference victory here Sunday afternoon.

The Loggers improved to 3-0 in the NWC and 5-3 overall. The loss dropped the Missionaries to 0-3 in conference and 1-13 on the season.

Puget Sound picked up single runs in the first and second innings on just one hit, taking advantage of four stolen bases, three walks, two wild pitches and a passed ball.

Whitman struck back in the top of the fourth inning. After freshmen Cam Young and Casey Minnick led off with a walk and single, Korsmo ripped his second home run of the season.

The Loggers regained the lead at 4-3 with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, two walks sandwiched around a single led to the first run when the next batter was hit by a pitch. The second run scored on a balk.

Whitman loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the fifth when sophomore Chris Andrews walked, freshman Jimmy Madden singled and senior Jay Richards dropped down a bunt single. Following a strike-out, freshman Casey Minnick lifted an RBI-sacrifice fly ball to center field to even the score at 4-4.

Korsmo drew a walk to reload the bases, but a fly ball to center ended the Missionary threat.

Puget Sound countered in the bottom of the inning, breaking the game open with five runs on two hits, three errors and three walks.

Minnick paced Whitman's seven-hit offense with two hits in three official at-bats.

Whitman hosts its first NWC games of the season next weekend against Lewis & Clark, starting at 11 a.m. Saturday with a doubleheader. The two teams finish their three-game series with a single game at noon Sunday.
