WALLA WALLA - Walla Walla Community College won the opener of a baseball twin bill against visiting Clark Sunday, 5-2, but the first weekend of play caught up to the Warriors in a 2-1 loss in 10 innings in the nightcap.

The Warriors, now 3-1, got seven strong innings out of starter Nick Jordan in the opener. Jordan didn't give up a run before being relieved by Ryan James, with Josh Yundt closing it out for WWCC.

In the nightcap, freshman Joe Arlt got the start, strking out eight Clark batters in six innings of one-run ball.

"I thought our pitching staff commanded the strike zone pretty well," Warrior coach Dave Meliah said. "We only gave up four earned runs on the day, so I was pleased with how the guys threw. Some freshmen got their first collegiate innings and they stayed pretty composed for the most part.

"The first game, we swung the bats well again, like we did Saturday (in 14-3 and 9-1 wins over Miles), but we left a few too many runs out there," he said of the six-hit effort. "We had a lot of freshmen out there in the second game, and that's something they're just going to have to learn. It was the last game of a long weekend, and they've got to stay mentally focused. But we'll learn from it."

The Warriors host a non-league mini-tournament this weekend, facing Blue Mountain at 11 a.m. Saturday, with Blue Mountain and Columbia Basin playing at 2 p.m., and then WWCC plays CBC at 5 p.m. The teams play the same schedule Sunday.
