I don't often write letters in response to letters to the editor. But I feel compelled to make an exception for Charles Spencer's Feb. 28 letter ("A few thoughts on civil servants' union").
Wow. What can I say? To read Mr. Spencer's letter one would think that civil servants are nothing but a bunch of paper- pushing slackers. Well let me tell you, that just isn't true.
I'm a retired federal worker. For 30 years I worked for the U.S. Forest Service, and for 30 years I got up every morning and went to work to serve people like Mr. Spencer.
Everybody I knew and everybody I worked with had a work ethic like you wouldn't believe.
We gave our best. And we did it for an average 30 percent less than our counterparts in private industry.
Public servants are just that. They work their tails off to serve people like Mr. Spencer.
I just wish civil servants throughout the country would all strike for about a week so people like Mr. Spencer would find out just how valuable they are.
Oh, and by the way, we are not the root of all the problems facing this country as people like Mr. Spencer would like you to believe.
