Scholars to discuss past, present Buddhist preachers

WALLA WALLA -- The Asian Studies program at Whitman College invites two scholars of Buddhism to campus to discuss "Buddhist Preachers Past and Present." The talks will begin Thursday at 7 p.m. in Maxey Auditorium, near the intersection of Otis Street and Boyer Avenue.

David Drewes of the University of Manitoba will begin the evening with a discussion of Dharmabhanaka, the preachers of the Dharma who are responsible for the formulation and spread of early Mahayana Buddhism.

Jeffrey Samuels of Western Kentucky University will then speak about Buddhist preachers working today as missionaries in Malaysia.
