Whit women's tennis team wins

Whitman's Lizzy Schiller picks up a three-set victory to propel the Missionaries to a win over Pacific.

Forest Grove, Ore. - Just call her the closer.

Three weeks after gutting out a three-set singles victory to clinch a 5-4 Northwest Conference victory over Willamette, Whitman College junior Lizzy Schiller did it again on Saturday against Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore.

With Whitman ahead 4-3 and two matches still in play, Schiller rallied for a three-set victory at No. 5 singles to put the Missionaries over the top.

Whitman improved to 5-2 the NWC and 5-4 overall while dropping the Boxers to 2-4 in conference play.

Whitman took the early lead in the team scoring by winning two of three matches in doubles.

The two sides then split the top four matches in singles, giving Whitman a 4-3 cushion. Senior Elise Otto posted a dominating 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles, and sophomore Kate Kunkel-Patterson won 7-5, 6-3 at No. 4.

Playing at No. 5 singles, Schiller won the first set 7-5 but dropped the second 6-3. After falling behind 3-0 to start the third set, Schiller reclaimed the momentum and won six of the next seven games to polish off the victory.

"Lizzy stays composed in those situations," Whitman coach John Hein said. "She likes to compete."

Schiller also shared in one of Whitman's wins in doubles, joining first-year teammate Hannah Palkowitz for an 8-5 win at No. 3.

Kunkel-Patterson and junior Emily Rolston tallied Whitman's other doubles point with an 8-4 win at No. 2.

Otto and sophomore Alyssa Roberg dropped an 8-6 decision to Pacific's Cat Coya and Megan Yoshimoto at No. 1 doubles.

Goya slipped past Roberg 6-3, 7-5 at No. 1 singles, and Rolston fell 1-6, 7-6, 6-4 at No. 3.

After Schiller scored the clinching fifth team for Whitman, Pacific's Traci Mo completed a 6-3, 7-5 win over Oliva Bates, one of Whitman's first-year players.

Whitman continues NWC play when it battles George Fox at 1 p.m. Sunday in Newberg, Ore.

The Missionaries also have a neutral court match set for 11:30 a.m. Monday against Hardin-Simmons (Abilene, Texas) at Club Green Meadows in Vancouver, Wash.
