Esta June Slater passed away Friday March 11, 2011, at Providence St. Mary Medical Center in the arms of her loving family. June was born June 30, 1921, in Pamona, Mo., to Rush and Lois Hardy Higginbotham. She moved west with her family to Juniper Canyon and attended school in Burbank. In 1937, the family moved to Touchet where June graduated from high school in 1939. She married Elmer Leon (Buck) Slater on June 18, 1939, and they raised their family in Touchet. June was a housewife first and foremost, but she also worked outside the home as a cook for the Touchet School District, Migrant Day Care Center, the Elks Club and the Touchet-Gardena Lions Club. She was a member of the Touchet Congregational Church where she received the Mother of the Year Award in 1983. She also was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Touchet-Gardena Grange. June loved her family, flowers, church and cats. She was a shining example of a true Christian to anyone who knew her.
Viewing will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, and a funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, at Herring-Groseclose Funeral Home, 315 W. Alder Street, with Sam Boettcher officiating. Graveside service will be held at the Touchet Cemetery on Byrnes Road.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Rebekah and Patrick Martin and Thayus (Chris) and Ned Londo; son and daughter-in-law, Rush and Charlene Slater; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, siblings and parents.
